Easy ways to be eco-friendly

What we do or do not do always affects the environment. Many careless actions, like leaving the lights on unnecessarily or throwing trash on the street, causes serious damage to the earth.

Even taking some small steps toward a more eco-friendly lifestyle can help, and SM offers some simple eco-friendly practices to get you started.

Reduce plastic. Most plastic is non-biodegradable and it may take a thousand years or more before it breaks down into small pieces. Join local eco-friendly initiatives such as replacing the use of plastic straws with metal, glass, or bamboo straws. You may also opt to bring a reusable, durable ecobag when you go shopping.

SM Supermalls’ “My Own Bag” campaign helps reduce the use of plastic bags with the recyclable Green Bag made from 100% polypropylene, a non-toxic material that is safe for all skin types. The bag is made to last for at least two years, making it quite cost-efficient.

Recycle. The amount of garbage we create is constantly increasing, making recycling a must. Recycle and earn extra cash at the same time by joining the “Trash-to-Cash Recycling Market,” a public incentive program for proper disposal and management of waste. Check out details of this program, which happens every first weekend of the month, at your nearest SM mall and make money as you help protect the environment.

Don’t be a litter bug. Dispose properly your garbage at all times. Join clean-up activities like the annual coastal cleanup organized by SM by the Bay in support of the International Clean-up Day on September 15.

Go solar. Solar energy is clean and renewable. Harnessing power from the sun also benefits the environment. Consider installing solar panels in your home and reduce your electricity bill in the long run. Even top corporations are going solar for the benefit of the environment and the community. For instance, SM City North Edsa is the first mall in the Philippines to promote solar power energy. Alongside SM Mall of Asia and SM Seaside City Cebu, other SM malls that house solar panels are in Cauayan, Cabanatuan, lloilo, Trece Martires, and Tuguegarao.

Support green businesses. Green business is smart business. Supporting sustainable businesses makes you a responsible consumer and helps create a greener world. SM has adopted sustainable programs, such as the integration of transport terminals in malls to ease traffic and reduce air pollution. It also builds disaster-resilient malls with water catchment basins in flood-prone areas.

Stay committed to create a cleaner and greener environment with SM. For more information, visit www.smsupermalls.com and its Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts: @smsupermalls.
